Adjani Klinsmann Okpu-Egbe
Profile/CV
My name is Adjani and I am an Expressionist artist. I was born and educated in Cameroon, West Africa and now live and work in London. My works are very special because I'm a self-taught artist whose paintings are often autobiographical in nature. As someone who does not like 'limitations', I also do draw inspiration from a wide range of subjects, ranging from culture, politics, economics, religion, enviroment and anything that catches my fancy.
MEDIA
I use strong primary acrylic colours, oil, pens, ink, pencils on canvas, wood, and 'preferably found media' to give my work originality and a unique striking view. I do take credits for being the pioneer artist to simultaneously use self and hand made strings in the completion of my highly inspired ''Crucifix Project''. I am a daring and energetic artist, a character trait which is conspicuously consistent in most, if not all of my works.
MISSION
My mission as an artist is to instigate objective debate, in order to educate, heal, sensitise, inspire, and help people all over the world, in any other way that I can. I must confess that through fate and sheer resilience, I am very fortunate to 'still be here', and for a very long time, I pondered about the raison d'etre of my own existence! I wondered about all the mysteries that have characterised my life so far, I wondered if other people Know why they are here or what they are here for! I wondered if life is just about making money, spending it, die, be buried, rot away and be forgotten! Meanwhile I am now fortunate to have unravel the purpose of my own existence, (to help change lives through ART), it has not impeded me from contemplating about the numerous contemporary issues going on around the world!
VISION
I have already hinted about my vision in my mission above! However, amongst my numerous visions, there is one that is very close to my heart, because, I am a victim, and that is 'depression' I have been managing it for a long time now, haven found Art Therapy as an indespensably effective force in the fight against clinical depression, where 'orthodox' treatments have failed and had even more adverse effects on me!
In a reverse of the acceptable norm, the lackadaisical approach taken by a well known and respected institution, (which I can not name here), to help me combat depression inspired me to resort to my own methods (arts), and interestingly, this was revealed to me under mysterious circumstances.
So far, this has been gradually effective and I intend to help other people manage depression in a similar way. It is absurd that in a highly affluent, knowledgeble, and supposedly civilised society, 3 in 5 people suffer from depression, yet many more people have an issue with that! (check out my painting, Castigating the Taboo)!. I am presently writing a book, titled; THE THERAPEUTIC MAGIC OF ARTS, to be published by the end of this year! I do invite everyone who is interested to join me in this inspirational and iconic journey. If you are or have suffered from depression, or know anyone who has been affected by it, then you would understand what I am talking about. But more importantly, join me and together, let's do something positive about it!
'Education is a lifetime investment, seconded only by the virtue of kindness'! (Adjani, Aug 2008).
Thank you
Adjani
