Charlie Levine

Profile/CV

As its name suggests TROVE is a container for treasure and TROVE gallery and its exhibitions are loyal to that term of phrase. TROVE do not exhibit formal white cube gallery shows in a clean clinical space, rather TROVE offers artists (and audiences) an opportunity to work in a different type of environment, a dusty one with history and relevance to the city of Birmingham. TROVE, currently located at The Old Science Museum in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, allows for both the curators and the artists to explore the presentation of work in new ways through discussions about the pieces for display and the site.

Curators Charlie Levine and David Miller see TROVE as taking risks in terms of exhibiting somewhat unconventionally contemporary art works in a dusty former museum. This dislocation of representation based around conversations and the difficulties a space such as TROVE presents the curators, artists and viewers means that no two shows will ever be the same.

As Charlie and David says “We [TROVE] are presenting things that we like, artists that make us react sympathetically to the space and light, we don’t have a particular remit, we’re not limiting TROVE’s programme to themes or styles of representation, rather we’re letting these things evolve naturally. First and foremost we’re about play, experimentation and confronting certain challenges that the old science museum presents whilst working with some of the most exciting and new artists from around the world.”
