Cheryl Papasian

MA Fine Art 2013 - Chelsea College of Art and Design

Cheryl Papasian is concerned with surfaces in sculpture and inconsistences in the values of materials. Her installations combine synthetic and traditional materials that seek to question the materiality of consumer products and art objects. Ideas of artificiality, luxury and the closing gap between high and low culture are crucial to Cheryl’s practice. She is also interested in finishes that imitate gold or bronze but are actually plastic, wood or plaster. By presenting a shiny excess of artificiality and luxury, she investigates the closing gap between high and low culture.

Her practice discusses the notion of lasting value by juxtaposing handcrafted bronze and ceramic objects with inexpensive manufactured items, creating a bricolage constructed to fit an exhibition space. The objects in her installations contradict and complement simultaneously; mingling elements of the real and the artificial with the valued and disposable, jarring the organic and the synthetic until it may not be possible to see what is handcrafted and what is not. She uses this visual disconnect to examine the intricate and fluctuating relationships between objects, pleasure, value and consumerism. Her work reflects and anticipates our current civilization just as it shares in it.
