chris wood

For Chris Wood, her canvas is glass and her medium is light. She uses one to manipulate the other, with subtle interventions carefully placed in the optical plane.  She harnesses patterns of light, which recall ephemeral glimpsed moments in the natural world.  Wood is interested in restoring the lyrical properties of glass and how we engage with its ability to captivate.  Her sculptures are simple arrangements of optical materials, which create kinetic patterns. Her work brings a wistful romanticism to a minimalist aesthetic. Inspired by artists like James Turrell and Dan Flavin, Wood tries to order the accidental and make us reflect on the experience of seeing.

After studying Furniture Design at Middlesex University she went on to study glass at the Royal College of Art, where she worked on architectural scale projects dealing with light and space.  Wood produces innovative glass installations for gallery exhibition and has shown extensively throughout the UK and shows regularly at Art Fairs in Europe, Canada and the United States.  She also produces work to commission and has recently completed commissions for organisations such as IPC Media, Deloittes, the Wellcome Trust,  Premier Travel. She has a particular interest in creating work for theraputic environments and was recently commissioned by  St Helens, NHS Trust and The Christie Hospital, in Olham.

In 2005 she was selected for the Arts Council England East’s Escalator Visual Arts Scheme.
