David Knowles

David Knowles works with various disciplines including photography, video and new media to create artworks that respond to the commercial and social role of the photographic image in contemporary culture. Previous projects include an intervention on a rotating billboard in Leeds railway station and a six-week durational screening at The Mailbox, an exclusive shopping arcade in Birmingham. These site-specific installations embrace the enticing landscape of advertising imagery through exploring the symbiotic relationship between advert and viewer and manipulating the persuasive psychological realm within which these images are consumed.
Recent works also investigate the domestic role of photography as a medium to record and recollect definitive life moments. Through collecting personal photographic remnants from photo labs, Knowles amasses a vast archive of emotional experiences in an attempt to discover purity within a medium loaded with excess and expectation. Refining content and subject with context and site, Knowles' artworks often exist in a latent state, paradoxically saturated and void.
