Douglas Clark

Profile/CV

Doug Clark's work embraces the industrial aesthetic, bringing to the forefront that which we normally ignore as "just being there". In this work 'non-art'; to which he means functional constructions never envisaged as art, are taken as starting points from which new and idiosyncratic structures are developed. These 'non-art' entities could be factories, buildings or machinery systems. The structures derived, may be inexact replications and they may or may not they infer a process or function, however, by manipulating their original context, one can reposition these replications as an art-objects. He is interested in how the observer interacts with the work. By making the work large enough, the individual must walk around or through it, thus addressing what they see and making conscious decisions based on this information. Finally, there are underlying political elements to some aspects of his recent and current work. This is not meant to put forward a specific point of view but to encourage the viewer to examine some of the issues within the society in which we live. Doug Clark has an MA in Fine Art and apart from his own practice, is also engaged in post-grad research.
