General Idea were a collective group of Canadian artists made up of Felix Partz, Jorge Zontal and AA Bronson.They produced installation and printed work from 1967 to 1994. G.I. created a body of important early conceptual and media-based art. Their collaborations became a model for artist-initiated activities which continues to have a powerful influence on subsequent generations of Canadian and international artists. General Idea were the creator/publishers of File Magazine,an original bi-yearly art publication which spoofed Life Magazine.It showcased international cutting edge artists and promoted the vibrant Toronto cultural scene, based around Queen Street West in the 1970's-1980's. The group worked in Toronto,through the 1970's,Exhibiting globally. General Idea relocated to New York 1986 - 1993 before returning to Toronto for the last few months of their time together.Both Partz and Zontal died of AIDS in 1994 and many of their last projects reflect this impending tragedy.
