Internationally acclaimed sculptor Jeff Lowe has lived and worked in London since the early 1970’s. Since the early 80’s Lowe has spent part of the year working in Portugal, where he has developed a house and studios.
Lowe came to prominence with his first one man show in 1974 at the prestigious Leicester Galleries in London’s Cork St. Lowe was only twenty-one and shortly after represented Britain at the Paris Biennale. Exhibitions at the Hayward Gallery and Serpentine Gallery were followed by many one-man shows, most recently at the Robert Steele Gallery, New York. Selected group exhibitions include Hayward Gallery (London), Guggenheim, (Venice) Ikon Gallery (Birmingham) Gallery Josine Bockhoven, (Amsterdam) Waddington &Shiell Gallery (Toronto) and National Gallery (Australia)
Lowe won the Pollock-Krasner Award, New York in 1993 and consequently was short-listed for Hakoni Prize, Japan 1994; other awards include the Greater London Arts Award (1976), and the Sainsbury Award (1975). Lowe was an artist in residence at Mermer Stone Quarry, Yugoslavia, (1976) and Praham College, Melbourne, Australia (1977). Public Collections include Leicester Education Authority, Arts Council England, Contemporary Arts Society, Channel 4 Television and the National Gallery, Australia. Lowe studied at Leicester College of Art (1970-72) and St. Martin's School of Art (1971-75). He was taught by amongst others Sir Anthony Caro, Sir Philip King and William Tucker
Jeff Lowe taught part-time in many Art Schools including Reading University, Canterbury College of Art, and Nottingham School of Art as well as the advanced course at St. Martins School of Art and concluded his teaching 1995 in order to concentrate fully on his own work.
He initiated the widely acclaimed 'Greenwich Artists Studios' in 1975 and started encouraging artist to join the Live/Work warehouses in Havelock Walk, Forest Hill in 1995.
During the last eight years he has expanded his living and working environment in Portugal. This has been featured in many publications. The Live/Work warehouse at Six Havelock Walk has also been designed and completed during the same period, as well as a new warehouse and showing space in Brockley, South East London.
He has recently designed his twelve thousand sq ft living and studio space which should be under construction within the next few months.
Jeff Lowe is currently working on a series of sculptures which will be shown in Cork St, London in May. These sculptures incorporate much of Lowe’s experience of over thirty-five years of making.
