With a successful career in marketing and design under his belt, John reinforced a lifelong commitment to the arts by supplementing his degree in English with an MA in art criticism in the 1990s. After a brief spell in academia, he progressed from talking and writing about art to making it, combing his love of travel with the creative pursuits of photography, drawing and writing.
One strand of John Cowpertwait's work reflects an engagement with both the functions and materiality of display, signage, advertising and propaganda. A second strand investigates the presence and meaning of discarded articles and objects - the everyday things that are disposed of, unwanted and no longer required. Through his images John ressurects otherwise forgotten items for observation and scrutiny. He is particularly interested in the shifting interplay between images that produces new meanings, significances and ambiguities.
