John Hutton

John Hutton is a British abstract artist who lives and works in Northern France. In over thirty years his commitment to non-figurative art has resulted in a large and diverse body of work. He uses acrylic on canvas and is interested in pure painting. The principles of geometry, light and scale has led him to reject subject matter that deals with representation- the treatment of form and colour having its own innate reality. Working with issues of balance, tension, proportion and scale, paintings are created which are inspired by life itself.

• Born in London in 1948
• Lives and works in northern France
• Studied at Watford School of Art & St. Albans School of Art
• First abstract works exhibited Air Gallery, London 1976
• First solo exhibition Middlesex University Gallery, London 1981
• Taught at Chelsea School of Art, London
  and visiting lecturer at other London colleges

Since the 1970's I have focused on geometric abstraction.
My paintings are created from a variety of sources and are
produced through organisation, choice, trial and experimentation
using simple systems of construction.

I work principally in acrylics on canvas using flat colour within a
minimalist square or rectangular format and also various print media.
During research and production stages, chance plays a part and
often new areas of investigation lead to the next series.

The dynamics involved in the work reveals opposition and
interplay between the vertical, horizontal and diagonal elements;
based on what feels right to the eye and not just on exact
mathematical theories of proportion or ideal ratios.
