John Taylor

Profile/CV

I took an interest in photography in 2003 after being inspired by landscape scenes of the places I visited when traveling. It was studying for my degree, whilst documenting the ruins of an old asylum, that I recognised how I might use my photography to try and convey a range of meanings, themes and thoughts. My photography style has thus gradually changed over the years as I have developed and experimented with my understanding of what inspires me and how I might present these ideas in the photographic medium. Whilst nature is still one of my main inspirations, philosophy, nostalgic emotions, escapism and intrigue also arise as key themes within the images I take. My ongoing “Urban Exploration” project reflects these notions; using decay and ruins as metaphors for life & death and the boundaries of person, place, and time. For my personal work I favour the use of film and natural light, which I feel reflects the true colours and tones as they appear to me.
