Julie Umerle is an American-born contemporary artist who lives and works in London. She studied at Parsons School for Design in New York City and Falmouth University, Cornwall.
Umerle's solo exhibitions include Rewind, Art Bermondsey Project Space, London (2016) and Cosmos or Chaos, studio1.1, London (2010). Group shows include SCOPE Art Show, Miami, Florida (2016), Contemporary British Watercolours, Maidstone Museum (2015); Present Tense, Swindon Art Gallery (2015); and Priseman Seabrook Collection, Huddersfield Art Gallery (2014).
She is the recipient of several awards from Arts Council England (2015, 2008, 2007, 2005) and a 2001 Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation award. Her paintings are in collections including Deutsche Bank, Swindon Art Gallery, Madison Museum of Fine Art (USA), and The Connaught.
Umerle's paintings are a combination of precision and chance. Her paintings explore the materiality of paint and the processes of abstract painting. She works in series that are often open-ended, examining similarity, repetition and difference within each group.
