Julie Umerle



Julie Umerle is an American-born contemporary artist who lives and works in London. She studied at Parsons School for Design in New York City and Falmouth University, Cornwall. 

Solo exhibitions include Rewind at Art Bermondsey Project Space, London (2016) and Cosmos or Chaos at studio1.1, London (2010). Group shows include Contemporary British Watercolours at Maidstone Museum (2015); Present Tense at Swindon Art Gallery (2015); Priseman Seabrook Collection at Huddersfield Art Gallery (2014). 

Umerle is the recipient of several awards from Arts Council England (2015, 2008, 2007, 2005) and a 2001 Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation award. Her paintings are in collections including Deutsche Bank, Swindon Art Gallery and The Connaught.

Artist Statement

Umerle's paintings are a combination of precision and chance. Her paintings explore the materiality of paint and the processes of abstract painting. She works in series that are often open-ended, examining similarity, repetition and difference within each group.
