This selection of Mark Bell's work is from an on-going series of pre-made objects that have been further developed to express aesthetic and political thoughts. The series of camouflage t-shirts with slogans printed on them, exhibited in New York in 2004, are situationist by nature.
They have been produced in several versions; hung on wooden poles and photographed to produce large-format, glossy images. The large, oversized pencil, exhibited in London in 2005, tackles aspects of cultural colonialism. Art Monthly, April 2005, said the pencil was part of 'a collection of objects located somewhere between memory, desire and economic exchange that become elusive and troubling'.
The chair with nails exhibited in London in 2009 is 'a chilling reminder of the harsh cultural political realities man faces in his connection with others'.
