Noriko Matsubara was born in Hachinohe, Japan. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Arts) from Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, and completed a MA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, UK. Noriko Matsubara is currently based in the UK.
Matsubara works in a variety of medium including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture and installation. Her recent work focuses on chigiri-e, a traditional Japanese art form in which picutres are created from pieces of hand-torn Japanese paper called washi. Matsubara's chigiri-e is inspired by the natural world and uses newspaper instead of washi creating a unique contrast between subject and materials.
