Playpaint
Profile/CV
playpaint is a collaboration between two artists, Damian Nelson and Michael Gittings. They are based in London and began producing paintings together in 2008.
playpaint was conceived to generate works of art without the intervention or presence of authorship. Paintings are constructed following their own logic; each one independent from the next. Some failed paintings are recycled as hybrids.
The paintings are deliberately resolved and employ a decisive engineered aesthetic. playpaint’s working method is to invent and design a process of fabrication which can generate the visual elements necessary for each work. This is achieved directly, or through the application of found objects or constructed tools.
The visual elements within each painting are basically simple and non-representational. Sometimes these elements, when combined or repeated, generate complexity and noise. In production the paintings resist engagement with ideas of meaning, language or context; but presented as spectacle they aspire to manufacture an experience of absurd and compelling distraction; a proposition of primitive entertainment conceived as an end in itself.
