I think I am a tourist in a film called 'natural landscapes'. Landscapes are, partly, an escape for me from the madness of the human mind and its tendency to create endless stories. Years ago, while my student friends were out drinking in warm pubs, I was laying out my sleeping bag for the night in a mountain rescue hut as snow fell in the Peaks. Nowadays I encourage the stories, stay at home a bit more, but also explore the very traditional idea of landscape as picturesque or sublime, mysterious, albeit interspersed with the ridiculous and the absurd.
My painting is ultimately a tribute to and celebration of the romantic aspects of landscape and the relationship between romance and survival or brutality. However, I have never wanted to be pinned down to just one thing and there are a number of layers to the work. The use of cinema imagery and that of popular culture, predominantly the Western film genre (loaded with another view of landscape), has also slipped into some of my work, which tends to raise the question of illusion and authenticity. Also within the landscapes is a sense of dynamism and the sensing of some kind of spirit or essence of wilderness, which arises intuitively.
