Ruth Philo

Ruth's paintings are concerned with colour, light and surface and their power to evoke feeling and memory.  Her work is not an explanation or depiction of the world but rather distillations of sensation and feeling, experiences of being in the world.  Through a dialogue with the painting process, they become a record in themselves with their own condensed histories revealed in their surfaces.

Abstract expressionism and minimalism are at the source of Ruth's practice, but her painting is located in contemporary 21st century abstraction, where gesture has become touch and the scale is often intimate, working face to face with the viewer.

Ruth exhibits regularly in the UK, she has shown at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and has been selected for the 2015 Jerwood Drawing Prize exhibition.  She is a member of Contemporary British Painting and has an MA Fine Art from Norwich University of the Arts (2011)
