Shepard Fairey Biography - ArtLyst

Shepard Fairey was born in 1970 in Charleston, South Carolina.

After studying at the Rhode Island School of Design he opened a small print studio producing tee shirts and stickers. He made his name as an artist and graphic designer, emerging from the vibrant skateboarding scene and is also a well respected DJ.

His first notable work was his "André the Giant Has a Posse" sticker campaign, in which he used tabloid imagery.

His work reached a far wider audience in the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign when his portrait of Barack Obama was used as a poster design.

The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston sights Fairey as one of today's best known and most influential street artists. His work is in collections including, The Smithsonian, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
