Valerie Schmidt is interested in photographic portrayal as a staged observation of emotional behaviour.
She thinks that Photography is the most momentary medium, that can outline facial expression and gestures and transform them into an autonomous image. Expression often appears more articulated when it has a chance to act freely, instead of being embarrased by a camera.
She also believes that the staging of emotional states does not trace the origin of it´s action when the image is willingly considered as a document.
She was born 1982 and graduated with honours at the Folkwang School Essen in 2009. In 2007 she studied at the Kunsthøgskolen i Bergen, Norway and received a scholarship at the Centquatre in Paris and at CallArts in Valencia, California in 2009. She lives and works in Berlin.
