Victoria Playford
Profile/CV
I work with natural and man-made materials creating site-specific installations. Central to my practice is the investigation into historical events and the manipulation of materials.
My work is not just concerned by the site’s physical elements of scale, texture and proportion, but by its location and historical identity. These ideas are explored through the re-construction of everyday materials. I am interested in transforming materials such as paper and ash into objects reminiscent of architectural and geometric forms. The combinations and configuration of these materials reveals an underlining sense of narrative, resulting in a work that is intimate and personal.
A recurring theme throughout my practice is the use of light. My work aims to use light as a way to emphasize the formation, texture and structure of the piece and evoke a sense of familiarity for the viewer. The resulting effects, with its shift in shadow, form and surface, provide the viewer with a perceptually challenging experience. This use of light allows the viewer to reconsider the condition of light in a playful and provocative way.
I am currently investigating environments such as housing estates, cupboards, lifts, tunnels, churches and disused stores. The temporary nature of these locations only allows the object to exist within a unique set of geographical co-ordinates and for a specific time frame. Under these sets of circumstances the work is unsuitable for relocation and therefore is never repeatable or re-shown elsewhere.
