I am, a printmaker/papermaker, performance artist, and teaching artist. My work on creating installation and prints emerges from the need to explore, document, and reclaim social issues including migration, displacement, and religion. The images and stories created through my work are based on personal experience as a Dominican immigrant, woman in the US who is now in the UK. My desire is not only to create images that tell stories, but also to open people’s eyes to the experience of marginalization. Today in the UK I’m dealing with being a new person, an American before Dominican. Through my work I want to break boundaries that have been place on artist in the US, where artist as intellectuals are not celebrated as an essential part in political and social issues but are placed in the margins of it. I want to play a critical role in terms of conscience, moral critique, and collective action.
