The NY artist Alex Katz, whose flat painting style has been popular for over six decades is designing a range of clothing and housewares for the Swedish chain H&M. Ranging from soft pastel to intensely rich hues of colour, Katz’s cerebral portraits and depictions of landscapes create the perfect opportunity to partner.

Since Karl Lagerfeld designed a line for H&M, other top fashion designers and brands have done one-off capsule collections for the chain. The Alex Katz H&M collection will feature his art on womenswear, menswear, accessories, and home decor. “The partnership with H&M surpassed my expectations. It is exciting for me to work with H&M to make my art more accessible to more people,” said the artist. This is not the first commercial venture for Mr. Katz, in 2015, he designed windows for Barneys New York’s Madison Avenue flagship store, a selection of housewares with his illustrations were also sold in-store.  Katz has also modelled for the J.Crew’s catalog. H&M has worked in the past with Jeff Koons. In 2014 they made a limited-edition bag depicting his famous balloon dog sculpture.

CoS, a brand of shops owned by H&M, has also collaborated with artists they're currently selling a collection inspired by an exhibition of minimalist artist Agnes Martin at the Guggenheim. CoS also created a shoe and backpack in conjunction with the London’s own Serpentine Galleries, while Uniqlo has an ongoing partnership with MoMA which results in works by Andy Warhol, Keith Harring, Julian Opie and Yayoi Kasuma printed on t-shirts. Gap has also teamed up with Visionaire to produce art shirts for both the Frieze Art Fair in London and Art Basel Miami Beach.

Alex Katz's new line will debut at H&M locations in the U.S. and on the brand’s website on 1 December.
