Alf Lohr: Sculptural Paintings Exhibited At The Playboy Club

Alf Lohr

An exclusive exhibition of paintings by Royal College of Art graduate, Alf Löhr and the sculptor Elliott Brotherton will be on view at London’s Playboy Club from Monday 3rd June until Tuesday July 30th.

Born in Germany, Löhr studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and completed a PhD at the Royal College of Art, London.  Having spent periods teaching, researching and working in the US, Australia, Spain, Japan and India, the artist has spent the last 25 years living and working in London. Löhr began his career as a sculptor, later exploring painting with a distinctive style and unpredictable brush stroke which is still inherently sculptural.

Since the early 1990s, Löhr’s natural artistic medium has predominantly been watercolour. Today the artist’s works are mostly large-scale paintings including a variety of mediums such as video collage, photography, and mixed media on canvas and paper. Most recently Löhr has been experimenting on a new series of paintings called ‘photo-paintings’. The ‘photo-paintings’ are produced from digital photographs and video works that are compiled together, printed and then painted directly onto the printed image creating an original work.

The collection of artworks showcased at the Playboy Club will present a variety of Löhr’s body of work over the last five years including his new photo-painting series. Playboy Club London has been playing host to exhibitions from a number of top artists and photographers over the last 12 months in association with Wade Contemporary to critical acclaim.  Members and visitors to the club have the opportunity to view and purchase the works on display over the course of each exhibition.

Sculptor Elliott Brotherton will feature two impressive hand-carved sculptures from a single block of Portland limestone alongside Löhr’s ethereal canvases. Brotherton studied stone carving at the Portland Trust and Fine Art in South Kent College of Art, where he specialised in ceramics and sculpture.
