Ana Milenkovic First London Solo Show Announced By PayneShurvell Gallery

Ana Milenkovic works across a wide range of media to create art that evokes surprising, provoking and multi-layered meanings. In the open-ended scenes and narratives of her paintings, objects lose their integrity and turn into containers for encoded thoughts and symbols. Milenkovic combines randomly collected photographic collages to reveal their visual and emblematic character. In this show, these delicate paintings are the result of an extensive collection of these photographic images and an elaborate series of sketches.

Sometimes chaotic and at other times delicately and elegantly constructed, her compositions serve as a meeting points where associations interact, sending the viewer through a variety of moods – nostalgic, comical, sublime, disturbing or grotesque. She uses the same motifs in more than just one composition, questioning the communication mechanisms and aesthetic conventions that influence our understanding of reality.

Process and play are an important part of Milenkovic’s practice. Her latest works are a continuation of these exciting ideas.

Ana Milenkovic was born in 1988 in Belgrade and lives and works in London. A recipient of the CliffordChance/University of the Arts Sculpture award in 2015, Milenkovic's recent exhibitions include If It Bends It’s Funny/If It Breaks It’s Not Funny at Bosse & Baum and Demimonde at Amberwood House.

James Payne and Joanne Shurvell opened PayneShurvell gallery in London's Shoreditch in June 2010. Since January 2014, their exhibitions have been in a variety of London locations. They have been showing international artists at 71 Blandford Street, London W1 from April 2015.
