The French fashion designer, painter and sculptor Andre Courreges, who created a a futuristic, ultra-modern style revolution in the 1960s and 1970s, has died at the age of 92. Born in Pau, Courreges began his working life as a civil engineer before turning to fashion designing for Cristobal Balenciaga for over 10 years.In 1961 he opened his own fashion house, never looking back.
Courreges’ 1960s fashion, defined a new independence for women and like Pierre Cardin and Paco Rabanne his work was influenced by the space-age, art and popular culture. His trademark angular mini dresses and trouser suits with goggles and helmets inspired by astronauts became known as the Moon Girl look. He also had the following of stars like Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot and Catherine Deneuve eager to promote his innovative style.
The artist Andy Warhol said, “Courreges clothes are so beautiful, everyone should look the same, dressed in silver. Silver merges into everything, costumes should be worn during the day with lots of makeup.”
Courreges retired in 1994 and devoted the rest of his life to painting and sculpting. Remembering Andre Courreges (March 9, 1923 – January 2016)
