This week, Art Basel stages one of the largest art shows for Modern and Contemporary works of art in Miami Beach Florida and Artlyst has their eyes and ears in the city, to report first hand what’s on. Participating galleries, include some of the worlds leading art establishments with artworks presented, and the content of parallel programming produced in collaboration with local institutions for each edition. Since its inception in 2002, Art Basel’s show in Miami Beach has established itself as the premier show in the Americas and ranks as one of the favourite winter event of the international art world. This year, Noah Horowitz will direct Art Basel’s Miami Beach show having been appointed Director Americas for Art Basel in August 2015. The week is not only about the main fair but also about a multitude of collateral events up and down and across the city. Here are our favourites.

SEAN KELLY | NEW YORK Booth B17

Sean Kelly is delighted to participate in Art Basel’s show in Miami Beach 2015, with a presentation of works by the following artists: Marina Abramović, Los Carpinteros, James Casebere, Jose Dávila, Iran do Espírito Santo, Antony Gormley, Laurent Grasso, Candida Höfer, Callum Innes, Idris Khan, Robert Mapplethorpe, Hugo McCloud, Alec Soth, James White, and Kehinde Wiley. About the gallery’s participation, Sean Kelly states, “We always look forward to Miami, but this year’s fair is the biggest and, arguably, the most important yet. LEHMANN MAUPIN | NEW YORK | HONG KONG Booth K16

At Art Basel in Miami Beach, Lehmann Maupin will open the fair with an all-female artist booth, showcasing new works by Mary Corse, Tracey Emin, Teresita Fernández, Shirazeh Houshiary, Klara Kristalova, Lee Bul, and Mickalene Thomas. The gallery will also highlight works by Ashley Bickerton, Billy Childish, Roberto Cuoghi, Robin Rhode, Do Ho Suh, and Juergen Teller. 

Lehmann Maupin will also present a dedicated selection of new works by Nari Ward as part of Kabinett. The centerpiece of this presentation will be We Shall Overcome, a new large-scale installation comprised of hundreds of shoelaces, suggesting an anonymous mass of people and the idea of mobility. On view concurrently during the fair will be Nari Ward: Sun Splashed, a mid-career survey exhibition at the Pérez Art Museum Miami.

PACE GALLERY | NEW YORK | LONDON | BEIJING | HONG KONG Booth B5

Pace Gallery will present a selection of works by modern and contemporary masters with a significant focus on the work of Louise Nevelson and her sphere of influence on post-war and contemporary art. The booth will feature Nevelson’s large-scale, monochromatic wall reliefs and free-standing sculptures in wood, as well as collage works from the 1960s and 1970s. It will also include rarely exhibited assemblage works, which extend Nevelson’s structural arrangements and highlight her working method and approach to material.

JACK SHAINMAN | NEW YORK | KINDERHOOK Booth B21

Jack Shainman will present new and significant works by a selection of gallery artists, including El Anatsui, Yoan Capote, Nick Cave, Barkley L. Hendricks, Brad Kahlhamer, Hayv Kahraman, Titus Kaphar, Enrique Martínez Celaya, Richard Mosse, Jackie Nickerson, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Hank Willis Thomas, Carrie Mae Weems and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye.

The gallery will also exhibit Ernest and Ruth, 2015, a sculpture by Hank Willis Thomas in the Public sector of the show. Ernest and Ruth takes the familiar form of a cartoon speech bubble, open in the center to form a bench where participants become physical manifestations of ‘truth’. Lincoln, Lonnie, and Me- A Story in 5 Parts, 2012, a film by Carrie Mae Weems will also be on view in the Film Library.

SPRÜTH MAGERS | BERLIN | LONDON | LOS ANGELES Booth L16

For this year’s edition of Art Basel Miami Beach Sprüth Magers will present works by a number of the gallery’s US-based artists including John Baldessari, George Condo; Barbara Kruger, Louise Lawler and Cindy Sherman. Works include a new large-scale painting from 2015 by George Condo; an archival print on canvas from 1996 by John Baldessari; and a multi-panel metal print by Cindy Sherman – part of a new body of work created in 2015 in which the artist adapts unpublished images from previous series.

STPI | SINGAPORE Booth B18

STPI returns to Art Basel in Miami Beach this year, featuring a number of leading internationally recognized artists, including Korean artist Do Ho Suh, Singaporean artist Jane Lee and British artist Ryan Gander. Simultaneously, Do Ho Suh’s: New Works runs from November 7 to January 2 at STPI in Singapore.

MICHAEL WERNER GALLERY | NEW YORK | LONDON | BERLIN  Booth C10

Michael Werner gallery is pleased to participate in the 2015 edition of Art Basel Miami Beach. The gallery will present work by artists including A.R Penck, ahead of the artist’s solo exhibition at Michael Werner London from 10 December. Work by Gianni Piacentino will also be on display, coinciding with a presentation of the artist at Prada Foundation in Milan. Further artists presented include Aaron Curry, Enrico David, Markus Lupertz and Sigmar Polke.

GAZELLI ART HOUSE  Walter & Zoniel Alpha-Ation

Gazelli Art House will present a unique performance entitled ‘Alpha-Ation’ by the young London-based artist duo Walter & Zoniel during Art Basel in Miami Beach. The presentation will feature a series of high-profile figures being photographed by the artists using a large hand-built camera, characterized by its 1850’s brass lens and long exposure time, to produce exclusive portraits similar to giant polaroids. Walter & Zoniel’s practice is multidisciplinary, capturing an alternative and honest perspective of their subjects through appealing to the viewer and making the work thought provoking, whilst also providing a momentary escape. Previous sitters for Alpha-Ation include Lindsay Lohan, Tinie Tempah and Emily Watson.

SEAN KELLY X CHROME HEARTS  4025 NE 2nd Avenue Miami Design District

Sean Kelly is delighted to announce the gallery will present an exhibition at Chrome Hearts’ Miami Design District location to coincide with the opening of the fair, on view through the end of January 2016. This collaboration between the gallery and Chrome Hearts builds upon the two companies’ long–standing relationship and will present a carefully selected installation of work by a number of the gallery’s artists, including Marina Abramović, Los Carpinteros, Jose Dávila, Robert Mapplethorpe, Mariko Mori, Alec Soth and Kehinde Wiley, among others. Sean Kelly X Chrome Hearts will offer visitors an exciting opportunity to see works by the featured artists in a unique and dynamic new context. The exhibition will be on view during store hours, Monday thru Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. 

Isaac Julien Stones against Diamonds (2015) ROLLS-ROYCE MOTOR CARS

National Young Arts Foundation, 2100 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, FL 33137

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars will present the North American debut of renowned artist Isaac Julien’s work Stones Against Diamonds during Art Basel in Miami Beach, 2015. The new work, commissioned as part of the Rolls-Royce Art Programme will fill the entire interior of the National YoungArts Foundation’s Jewel Room across fifteen screens, becoming the largest and most impressive presentation of the work to date. Shot in remote glacial ice caves in the South East of Iceland, the work has been inspired by a passage from a letter written by the Italian-born Brazilian modernist architect and designer Lina Bo Bardi about her love for semi-precious stones. The work is the latest compelling addition to the Rolls-Royce Art Programme, founded in celebration of the marque’s commitment to creating unique, rare and aesthetically powerful motor cars which transcend the worl d of conveyance to become works of art themselves.

Film: Art Basel Miami

Art Basel will present a premier program of over 50 films and videos by and about artists selected under the title ‘Our Hidden Futures’ from December 2 through 6, 2015. Screened on the 7,000-square-foot outdoor projection wall of the New World Center, the program is again curated by Art Basel film curator David Gryn, Director of Daata Editions and London’s Artprojx. First-time Art Basel film curator Marian Masone, Senior Programming Advisor at the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York, has selected the feature-length film ‘Troublemakers – The Story of Land Art’ (2015) by filmmaker James Crump for a special screening at the Colony Theatre on Friday, December 4. Gryn’s program of film and video works, drawn from the show’s participating galleries, will include work by Ida Applebroog, Anna Barham, Breda Beban, Janet Biggs, Sue de Beer, Rineke Dijkstra, Tracey Emin, Barbara Hammer, Shirazeh Houshiary, Jaki Irvine, Anna K.E. & Florian Meisenberg, Jumana Manna, Howardena Pindell, Cauleen Smith, Catherine Sullivan and Marnie Weber.

Art Basel Miami Public Sector

For the 2015 edition of Art Basel’s show in Miami Beach, Nicholas Baume, Director and Chief Curator of Public Art Fund, returns for his third year curating the show’s Public sector. Under the theme ‘Metaforms’, 27 large-scale and site-specific installations and performances by leading and emerging artists from over 11 countries will turn Miami Beach’s Collins Park into an outdoor exhibition space. Produced in collaboration with the Bass Museum of Art for the fifth consecutive year, the sector will include significant works by Olaf Breuning, James Capper, Tony Cragg, Melvin Edwards, Sam Falls, Sylvie Fleury, Katharina Grosse, Matt Johnson, Jacob Kassay, Kris Martin, Rubén Ortiz Torres, Athena Papadopoulos, Ishmael Randall-Weeks, Sterling Ruby, Michael Sailstorfer, Tomás Saraceno, Tony Tasset, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Francisco Ugarte, Timm Ulrichs, Marianne Vitale, Ursula von Ryding svard, H ank Willis Thomas, Robert Wilson, Yan Xing and Xiao Yu. 

The Public sector of Art Basel, whose Lead Partner is UBS, will open on Wednesday, December 2, with a special evening performance program featuring Xavier Cha (b.1980, United States), Ryan Gander (b. 1975, United Kingdom), Pope.L (b. 1955, United States) and Yan Xing (b. 1986, China)

Art Basel in Miami Beach’s Conversations series will open on Thursday morning with the Premiere Artist Talk, featuring artistsTrevor Paglen and Jenny Holzer. Paglen, who is known for layered explorations of contemporary themes of surveillance and covert governmental or corporate activity, and Holzer, who utilizes the rhetoric of modern information systems to address the politics of discourse, will consider questions of perception, language, and control.

On Friday, for the latest installment of his ongoing series on the diversity of artistic practice, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co-director, Serpentine Gallery, London, will lead a panel considering ‘The Artist as Slow Traveler’. The talk will consider several artists whose practices relate to travel and mobility, including Shilpa Gupta, Paulo Nazareth, Stephen Shore, Shahzia Sikander, and Samson Young.

Conversations will continue on Saturday with a panel from Art Basel’s Public/Private series, entitled ‘Should Art Schools Prepare Artists for the Art World?’ Moderated by author and cultural consultant András Szántó, the discussion will consider the role of an art school education in today’s highly professionalized art world, by bringing together Sanford Biggers, Artist and Associate Professor of Visual Arts, Columbia University, New York; Nicolas Bourriaud, Curator and Art Critic, Paris; Howard Singerman, Phyllis and Joseph Caroff Chair of Art and Art History, Hunter College, City University of New York, and Rosanne Somerson, President, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence.

The series closes on Sunday with a conversation between artist Nicole Eisenman, winner of a 2015 MacArthur ‘Genius Grant’, and her gallerist Susanne Vielmetter, Owner and Director of Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects, on the special relationship between the artist and her gallerist.

Highlights of the afternoon Salon program, an open platform for short presentations, will include ‘New Role for Art in Cuba’, featuring Stéphane Aquin, Chief Curator, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington and the artist Carlos Garaicoa, moderated by Iliana Cepero Amador, Art Historian, Curator and Adjunct Professor, The New School and New York University. Continuing the discourse about art scenes in South America, the Mexican artist Pedro Friedeberg will be in conversation with the Colombian artist Beatriz González.

On Friday, artist Rosalyn Drexler will take part in a dialogue with Katy Siegel, Thaw Professor, Stony Brook University, New York.

On Saturday, Salon continues with a discussion on sound works featuring the artists Mariele Neudecker, Camille Norment, Sophie Alsbo, and Alice Jacobs, and led by David Gryn, Curator of Art Basel’s Film sector and Founder of Daata Editions and Artprojx, London. Moderated by Andrew Goldstein, Chief Digital Content Officer, Phaidon/Artspace, New York, the Chairman ofRichard L. Feigen & Co., Richard L. Feigen, and the Owner of JTT, New York, Jasmin T. Tsou, will consider ‘The New Old Masters’.

Also of note will be ‘Transgender goes Mainstream’ with David J. Getsy, Goldabelle McComb Finn Distinguished Professor of Art History, Interim Dean of Graduate Studies, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago; the artist Gordon Hall; and Kimberly Drew, Founder, Black Contemporary Art, New York, moderated by William J. Simmons, Ph.D. Student, Art History and Women’s Studies, CUNY Graduate Center, New York.

Omar Kholeif, Manilow Senior Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; Maryam Eisler, Co-chair, Middle East Acquisitions Committee, Tate, London; Yasser Akkaoui, Editor-in-chief, Executive Magazine, Beirut; and writer and Art Critic Arie Amaya-Akkermans, will discuss ‘Collecting as a Political Act’. Sarah Douglas, Editor-In-Chief, ARTnews Magazine, will moderate ‘The Ethics of Art Advising’ with Wendy Cromwell, Independent Art Advisor, Founder Cromwell Art LLC, New York; Jo Backer Laird, Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler, New York; Jill Kraus, Art Collector, New York and Mary Sabbatino, Vice President and Partner, Galerie Lelong, New York.

As part of the Salon talks Nicholas Baume, Curator of Art Basel’s Public sector and Director and Chief Curator of Public Art Fund, New York, will speak with artists Ishmael Randall-Weeks, Hank Willis Thomas and Xavier Cha. Philippe Vergne, Director, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Daniel McClean, Head of Art and Cultural Property Law, Howard Kennedy LLP, London; and artist Matt Johnson consider the phenomenon of artists donations in a panel moderated by Roland J. Augustine, Partner, Luhring Augustine Gallery, New York. Artist Tony Oursler, Beatrix Ruf, Director, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Tom Eccles, Executive Director, Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, New York to discuss the contemporary role of the archive. The evolution of Los Ange les’ art scene will be at the heart of a conversation between artist Alex Israel and the author Bret Easton Ellis, moderated by Hans Ulrich Obrist

Each December in Miami, NADA holds a renowned art fair to vigorously pursue our goals of exploring new or underexposed art that is not typical of the “art establishment.” NADA Miami Beach is recognized as a much needed alternative assembly of the world’s youngest and strongest art galleries dealing with emerging contemporary art. It is the only major American art fair to be run by a non-profit organization. The fair is open for both members and non-members of NADA to apply.

Founded in 2005, PULSE Contemporary Art Fair is an established part of the annual art calendar with editions in New York and Miami Beach. This December, Latitude – Platform for Brazilian Art Galleries Abroad will support 21 Brazilian galleries displaying leading contemporary art at Art Basel in Miami Beach, and across four satellite art fairs in Miami. The 15 Brazilian galleries exhibiting at Art Basel in Miami Beach include A Gentil Carioca, Anita Schwartz Arte Contemporânea, Casa Triângulo, DAN Galeria, Galeria Fortes Vilaça, Galeria Leme, Galeria Luisa Strina, Galeria Millan, Galeria Nara Roesler, Galeria Raquel Arnaud, Luciana Brito Galeria, Mendes Wood DM, Silvia Cintra + Box 4, SIM Galeria and Vermelho. Three galleries will be showcasing work at UNTITLED including Baró Galeria, Central Galeria and Galeria Pilar. Museum  Events

The Rubell Family Collection 

The Rubell Family Collection/Contemporary Arts Foundation is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition, NO MAN’S LAND: Women Artists from the Rubell Family Collection, on view in Miami from December 2nd, 2015 through May 28th, 2016. This exhibition will focus on and celebrate work made by more than a hundred female artists of different generations, cultures and disciplines. These artists will be represented by paintings, photographs, sculptures and video installations that will entirely occupy the Foundation’s 28-gallery, 45,000-square-foot museum. Some galleries will contain individual presentations while others will present thematic groupings of artists. Several installations have been commissioned specifically for this exhibition.

In order to present the exhibition’s scope and diversity the Foundation will rotate artworks on view throughout the course of the exhibition, presenting different artists at different times. All of the artworks in the exhibition are from the Rubells’ permanent collection.

Other exhibitions organized by the Foundation include 30 Americans, which is currently on view at the Detroit Institute of Art through January 18, 2016 and 28 Chinese which is currently on view at the San Antonio Museum of Art through January 3, 2016. 30 Americans has now been presented at 9 institutions and seen by over one million people.

A fully illustrated catalog with essays will accompany the exhibition. A complimentary audio tour will also be available.

To celebrate the opening of NO MAN’S LAND, Jennifer Rubell will be presenting Devotion, her 12th annual large-scale, food-based installation on December 3, 2015 from 9 to 11 a.m. Devotion will explore the everyday gesture as a medium for the expression of love. Using bread, butter, and a couple engaged to be married as her media, Rubell will transform the simple act of cutting and buttering bread into a poetic exploration of repetition as devotion

Bass Art Museum

Sylvie Fleury is known for her seductive works that re-contextualize status symbols, luxury goods and brand slogans. Eternity Now, 2015, her newest site-specific neon, will be installed on the façade of the Bass Museum of Art’s Art Deco building (2100 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL, 33139) December 2, 2015 through May 31, 2016, as part of bassX, the museum’s series of artist projects presented during its year-long renovation.

“Sylvie Fleury uses contemporary iconography to suggest a deeper irony,” said Jose Carlos Diaz, Curator of Exhibitions, Bass Museum of Art. “While the museum undergoes its internal expansion, her glowing text Eternity Now, amplifies the museum’s present and infinite future all at once, while also speaking to the visitors of Miami Beach.“
