10th edition art fair rocks with $2.5 billion of art offered

It is the final day of November 2011 and this could only mean the preview day of Art Basel Miami and its VIP extravaganza. The Americans do this well and believe me with over $2.5 billion worth of art, ranging from Warhol and Koons to emerging artists from over 30 countries this 10th edition of the biggest U.S. art fair rocks!

Held annually at the Miami Beach Convention Center 260 galleries showing works by 2,500 artists and numerous satellite shows, including Art Miami, the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA), Pulse and Scope this is the only place to be on the art planet.“The art market is disconnected from the financial markets,” said Amir Shariat, London-based art collector and chief executive of Auctor Capital Partners Ltd. “These days, people feel safer owning a great artwork than having money in the bank.”

Work on display includes an 8-foot-stainless-steel skull titled “Die to Live” inset with 345,798 Swarovski crystals. The sculpture was not by Damien Hirst but created by Michael Benisty who collaborated with Swarovski on the piece. Paul McCarthy who currently is showing in London has a $950,000 pink silicone dwarf on offer at Hauser & Wirth gallery and an11-foot  sculpture of a pig hauling a house on its back by Chinese artist Zhang Huan is waiting to find a good home.
