Banksy’s Dismaland: Dystopian Theme Park Re-Tasked To Make Shelters For Migrants

After the theme park Dismaland – which has given Weston-super-Mare an economy boost of over £20 million closes to the public, and has seen the pop-up “bemusement park” visited by over 150,000 visitors in the last five weeks – it has now been appropriately ‘re-tasked’.

Bristol street artist Banksy’s ‘crap’ dystopian theme park Dismaland is being dismantled before being shipped to a migrant camp near Calais to make shelters, organisers have stated. The famed parked had Featured a ruined fairytale castle, a crashed Cinderella coach and miserable stewards wearing Mickey Mouse ears, the unique theme park was designed to satirise commercialised tourist attractions.

After five weeks the attraction in the faded seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare in southwest England shut down late Sunday. The park is now being taken apart, with elements of the structure being sent to a migrant camp in Calais, where thousands of people from troubled countries like Syria are living in squalid conditions and hoping to cross into Britain. “Coming soon… Dismaland Calais,” a message on the attraction’s website read.

“All the timber and fixtures from Dismaland are being sent to the ‘jungle’ refugee camp near Calais to build shelters. No online tickets will be available.” One of the works on display at Dismaland featured crammed migrant boats circling the waters near the White Cliffs of Dover, the first sight of Britain for many people who cross the Channel from France.

De La Soul and Pussy Riot were part of a Masked Ball evening event during the park’s final weekend. Now it looks like the centerpiece of a fire-ravaged Disney-like castle with payday lender stalls and a remote controlled boat game which highlights the plight of immigrants will be even-more directly re-tasked.
