The Margaret St Gallery is presenting an exhibition by Christian Vogt titled, Today I’ve Been You. Opening on 30 May 2013, it is a solo exhibition by this renowned Swiss artist, who is recognised as one of the most important and accomplished photographers exploring the limits of the medium today.

Born in 1946, he has been producing his impressive collection of photographic work since the late 1960s. Vogt is lauded worldwide for his creative inventiveness and unexpected twists. Photographic historian Martin Gasser fittingly identified him as “a master of photographic haikus and a virtuoso of associative pictorial storytelling.”

Vogt’s work has been exhibited worldwide and his photographs are held in numerous prestigious public and private collections including Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, The Foundation of Swiss Photography, Schaulager (The Museum of Contemporary Art in Basel), The Polaroid Collection in Cambridge, MA, The Albertina Collection in Vienna, and the Ilford Collection in London, to name a few. Vogt was awarded the Grand Prix at the first Fribourg Triennial of Photography and he is the recipient of Swiss National Scholarships, Canada Council Grants and several European and American art directors’ awards.

Christian Vogt: Today I’ve Been You brings together a diverse body of Vogt’s photography and three-dimensional works, showing the developments and perceptions that have occupied him during the latter part of his career. The exhibition showcases pieces from his renowned series: The Photographic Notes (1981- ongoing), Skinprints (2008- ongoing), Camera Obscura Narrative (2011) and Dakota (2012).

Despite the diversity in Vogt’s work, his photography has an unmistakable artistic signature. He is inspired by that which moves him: the what, when and how things come together both creatively and in life. Vogt strives to give form to that which one has experienced and about which one cannot speak. He continuously refines a philosophy that only seemingly concerns itself with the aesthetics of surface or superficial visual recognition. It addresses an inner truth, one that supersedes any ‘realism’. The introduction of aphoristic statements in his Skinprints series and “Gedankentafel” (inscribed slate piece) are more recent developments in this pursuit.

Christian Vogt: Today I’ve Been You will be showing at the Margaret Street Gallery until the 6th of July. Margaret Street Gallery is an independent gallery founded in April 2012. In the heart of Fitzrovia, central London, the gallery specialises in the photographic and moving image. Dedicated to all forms of the medium, Margaret Street Gallery aims to offer thought-provoking and diverse exhibitions.

Christian Vogt: Today I’ve Been You is open from 30 May—6 July at Margaret Street Gallery, 63 Margaret Street, London W1W 8SW
