The auction house Christie's has recorded exceptional results for their Autumn British and Irish Modern Art Sale. The market seems to be going from strength to strength, with the Evening and Day Sales achieving a combined total of £11,930,350 / $18,632,463 / €14,862,473. The Evening Sale was led by Dame Barbara Hepworth’sFigure (Sunion), which achieved £1,106,500 against a low estimate of £600,000 – an outstanding result which closely follows the sale of Figure for Landscape at Christie’s in June for £4.1 million, setting a new auction record for the artist. John Duncan Fergusson’s innovative, recently re-discovered portrait Poise sparked competitive bidding to reach £638,500 against an estimate of £80,000–120,000, achieving a world auction record for the Scottish Colourist. Further artist records were set for Euan Uglow’s stunning nude portrait Three in One, and For Jim Clark by British Pop artist Antony Donaldson.

Modern British sculpture also led the Day Sale, with Dame Elisabeth Frink’s Dog Idoubling its high estimate at £170,500, alongside strong results for paintings by William Scott, Sir John Lavery, Frank Auerbach and Alan Davie.

These results follow the highest total ever achieved for Modern British and Irish Art sale in June 2014, when the Evening and Day auctions achieved £24.6 million combined. Four world records were set during the Evening Sale for sculptures by Dame Barbara Hepworth, Dame Elisabeth Frink and F.E. McWilliam, and for a painting by John Craxton. Wiltshire Landscape by Eric Ravilious set a record for the artist in the Day Sale, at £242,500.

Following this year’s strong results we are now accepting consignments for our 2015 auctions. For more information please do not hesitate to contact one of our specialists.
