This is a big week for London Contemporary sales. The Evening and Day sales at Sotheby’s 15-16 February feature Richter, Warhol, and Hockney all priced with  seven figure estimates.  The Evening Auction of Post-War and Contemporary Art at Christie’s King Street on 16 February features masterworks by many of the most important artists in Europe and America including Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Martial Raysse, Jeff Koons and Andreas Gursky,. This sale is truly diverse in its personality, showcasing a group of pioneering contemporary artists that have emerged in recent years from around the globe, from Brazil to China to India to Iraq, side by side. At the heart of the auction is Andy Warhol’s monumental and rediscoveredSelf-Portrait; an iconic work that has not been seen on the market since its acquisition from his primary gallerist Leo Castelli in 1974. It forms a further and integral part of Warhol’s seminal series of ten large self-portraits, five of which are now housed in major museum collections. Jeff Koons’ Winter Bears  is another a key highlight of the February auction season. Executed in 1988, it is an important work from his acclaimed Banality series that launched the artist to meteoric success in the late 1980s. The final sales are at Phillips de Pury & Company Londonon the 17 and 18th and features 29 lots in the Evening sale with a low estimate of £5,820,000 / $9,309,823 and a high estimate of £8,550,000 / $13,676,802. 271 lots will feature in the Day sale with a low estimate of £3,536,0000/ $5,656,277 and a high estimate of £5,056,500/ $8,088,336; with a combined total low estimate of £9,356,000/ $14,965,781 and a high estimate of £13,606, 500/ $21,764,846. Highlights include Jean-Michel Basquiat, Overrun, 1985, estimated at £1,000,000-1,500,000. Executed in 1985 at the height of Basquiat’s powers, Overrun is a frantic, powerful canvas which features some of the most important themes found throughout the artist’s work. The sale also features Lucio Fontana, Concetto spaziale, Attese, 1964, estimated at £400,000-600,000. The present lot is a prime example of Fontana’s Tagli (slashes) paintings.
