Condo is a collaborative exhibition by 24 galleries over 8 London spaces. It is also a viable alternative to some of the problems faced by young galleries and artists at present. With the inherited landscape and business models of commercial galleries that opened in the 90s simply not working for young galleries anymore, and with key art centres like London and New York becoming increasingly financially prohibitive, Condo suggests a way for galleries to exhibit internationally that is conducive to supporting experimentation by emerging artists, that is feasible, and which relieves the art fair-induced complaint from audiences that “we never see exhibitions anymore”. The aim of the project is not to eradicate or replace art fair participation, but to introduce a lateral way for galleries to exhibit their artists abroad.
Condo proposes a unified model for collaboration and generosity between young commercial galleries, with visiting international galleries contributing the minimum sums just to cover basic costs (such as website and technicians), and host galleries giving in kind (by sharing their spaces and giving the visiting galleries a free space in London for a month). Some London galleries will be hosting shows by visiting galleries, others are collaborating directly with visiting galleries on a single exhibition. There are conversations with several galleries in different cities about picking up this model in their hometowns and we hope it could become a widespread, evolving network for support of young galleries and artists.
