Contemporary Arts Society Prize Money Lands On Nottingham

Cornelia Parker Presents £60,000 award to artist Christina Mackie and Nottingham Castle Museum to create major new artwork

Cornelia Parker OBE has presented artist Christina Mackie and the Nottingham Castle Museum with this year’s Contemporary Art Society Annual Award. The paired-up artist and museum combo beat five shortlisted proposals for a major new work of art, and have been given £60,000 to carry out their joint vision.

This unique Award aims to help museums commission new artwork that, once completed will remain within their permanent collections.  It contributes to the Contemporary Art Society’s mission to develop public collections of contemporary art across the UK.

The Director of Contemporary Art Society, Paul Hobson, explained how ‘This year’s selection panel had a particularly difficult decision to make’ due to ‘proposals of especially high calibre’; ‘the panel would ideally have enabled all five proposals to be realised, but we could not be more delighted with their choice’.

Victorious artist Christina Mackie, who will be creating the work with the Nottingham Castle Museum, is, of course, overjoyed and ‘thrilled to have this opportunity’. And, furthermore, applauds the work of the Contemporary Arts Society, and the Annual Award which ‘directly supports contemporary art entering public collections via commission’.

The award is also an honour for Nottingham, with Councillor Dave Trimble ‘delighted’ that the city has ‘won this prestigious award’: ‘It’s a great acknowledgement of the work of our Museums & Galleries’ and will ‘give us the opportunity to work with the artist to create a major piece, of national significance’.
