Corneille CoBrA Painter Dies Age 88

The last surviving Dutch member of CoBrA the European art movement active in the 1950's, Corneille, has died age of 88.The artist passed away Sunday in Paris where he had been living and working for many years. He had been active until his death, according to the CoBrA Museum in Amstelveen, Netherlands. His real name was Guillaume Cornelis Beverloo, Corneille was among the small group of Danish, Belgian and Dutch artists who formed what was initially called the Dutch Experimental Group in a Paris café in 1948. The group also included Karel Appel, artist brothers Constant and Jan Nieuwenhuys, Carl-Henning Pedersen and Jan Cox. The Artists named their avant-garde collective CoBrA as an acronym representing their home cities of Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. They were noted for their spontaneous, brightly coloured semi-abstract painting style "Corneille is also considered to be an important modern graphic artist. The museum said in a statement. "As one of the pioneers of CoBrA, he developed an entire new poetic art of painting."
