Damien Hirst Designs Olympic Closing Ceremony Stage Set

The British YBA painter Damien Hirst has designed the back drop or should I say floor drop for the Olympic closing ceremony. It is the largest of his 'Spin Art' paintings ever created and makes up a Union Jack flag viewed from above.

The closing ceremony of the Olympics is the largest global party ever staged in London. It has a distinctively British flavour. Organizers say it is "a celebration of all that's good about London, British people, our music and our culture." Visually, the show will celebrate British verve in art and design, from world-famous fashion designers like Vivienne Westwood -- and supermodels such as Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell -- to Brit-art icons such as Damien Hirst. A country where the sky and the architecture are both often gray loves a riot of color, so expect surreal and psychedelic visuals.

Damien Hirst was born in Bristol in 1965. He studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London from 1986 to 1989 and is considered by many to be the leading figure of the group known as "Young British Artists". The YBAs are characterised by their entrepreneurial spirit, independence and their ability to manipulate the media.Hirst dominated the art scene in Britain during the 1990s. His early career was closely linked with the collector Charles Saatchi, however over the last few years Hirst has distanced himself from this association. Hirst's work explores the uncertainty at the core of human experience; love, life, death, loyalty and betrayal. His work has been exhibited widely,in Britain, the USA, Australia, and Europe. Work is included in many public and private collections.
