Damien Hirst Installs Two Major Works in A London Restaurant

Damien Hirst has designed two new works of art that have become the centrepiece of a new restaurant in Shorditch. He is no stranger to the restaurant industry having founded Pharmacy in the 90’s in Notting Hill Gate.

The exhibited pieces have been specifically created to celebrate the opening of Mark Hix’s latest restaurant venture in East London. The works are consistent with Tramshed’s menu which is centred around chicken and beef dishes. ‘Cock and Bull’ (2012) – a Hereford cow and cockerel preserved in a steel and glass tank of formaldehyde – is elevated above diners in the centre of the 1000 square foot old electricity generating station. The work forms part of the ‘Natural History’ series, Hirst’s seminal collection of preserved animals. Alongside the monumental formaldehyde work, the artist has created a painting entitled ‘Beef and Chicken’ (2012). Installed at the mezzanine level, the painting depicts the 1990s cartoon characters ‘Cow and Chicken’ (Cartoon Network). The famous grade-2 listed tramshed building on Garden Walk and Rivington Street was designed by Vincent Harris and built in 1905 as an electricity generating facility for the Tramway System.

Damien Hirst was born in Bristol in 1965. He studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London from 1986 to 1989 and is considered by many to be the leading figure of the group known as “Young British Artists”. The YBAs are characterised by their entrepreneurial spirit, independence and their ability to manipulate the media.Hirst dominated the art scene in Britain during the 1990s. His early career was closely linked with the collector Charles Saatchi, however over the last few years Hirst has distanced himself from this association. Hirst’s work explores the uncertainty at the core of human experience; love, life, death, loyalty and betrayal. His work has been exhibited widely,in Britain, the USA, Australia, and Europe. Work is included in many public and private collections.
