Designer Philip Treacy, best known for the outrageous 'cat flap hat' worn by Princess Beatrice at the Royal wedding has been chosen to create the trophy for the Brit Awards 2014. Having spent a quarter of a century designing hats for some of the biggest celebrities in the world like Madonna, Kate Middleton and Isabella Blow, the designer  has been tasked with re-imagining the BRITs statue for 2014, picking up the baton from Damien Hirst who shaped it for 2013.

Treacy already has history with the BRITs as the man responsible for Lady Gaga’s headpiece and mask, which she wore during her powerful performance at the 2010 Awards in tribute to Alexander McQueen.

Treacy was awarded an OBE in 2007 for services to the British fashion industry, having created bespoke headwear for iconic figures like Valentino, Karl Lagerfeld, Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani. He also designed pieces for the Harry Potter films and a number of the Royal Family who attended the wedding of Prince William and Kate in 2011.

Speaking about his involvement in the BRIT Awards 2014 Treacy said: “Music has always been my inspiration and I’m fortunate to have worked with some of the industry’s greatest artists.

“My inspiration for the trophy comes from a uniquely British genre of music, Punk.”

BRITs Chairman Christian Tattersfield said: “Philip is renowned for his distinctive and memorable designs so we are thrilled to have him on board for this year.

“His involvement guarantees the 2014 award will continue the tradition of iconic BRITs statues and we are pleased to be able to reward music creativity with something so unique and special.”
