Is Damien Hirst a better designer than artist?
Artist Damien Hirst's latest venture into the world of graphic design finds his thinly spread, although highly sought after signature on a new, limited edition Brandy label and gift box. The work was created for friend, Alice Tempereley, whose family have been making Cider Brandy for 25 years from the company's own 150 acres of orchards.
The so called enfant terrible of British art, best known for his work featuring pickled cows and sharks, spots painted by assistants and spin art made by machines, has also recently designed a record sleeve for the California band the Red Hot Chili Peppers and a magazine cover for Garage Magazine a newly launched art-rag published by the partner of billionaire Roman Abramovich, the delectable Dasha Zhukova. Only 500 bottles of the Hirst-bottled cider brandy will be sold,10 being auctioned off for charity including a South African orphanage. The design features more spin art and must have taken all of three minutes to create. Well done Damien!
Damien Hirst was born in Bristol in 1965. He studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London from 1986 to 1989 and is considered by many to be the leading figure of the group known as "Young British Artists". The YBAs are characterized by their entrepreneurial spirit, independence and their ability to manipulate the media.Hirst dominated the art scene in Britain during the 1990s. His early career was closely linked with the collector Charles Saatchi, however over the last few years Hirst has distanced himself from this association. Hirst's work explores the uncertainty at the core of human experience; love, life, death, loyalty and betrayal. His work has been exhibited widely,in Britain, the USA, Australia, and Europe. Work is included in many public and private collections. He was awarded the Turner Prize in 1995
Tate Modern have announced the first substantial survey of the work of Damien Hirst which will run from 5 April - 9 September 2012. This is hardly a retrospective, given Hirst's age. It will instead cover in-depth two decades of the artist's output. The exhibition will highlight works including many of his most iconic pieces such as, The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living 1991 (the shark) and his Spot and Spin paintings. In the distant past, Hirst also designed a label for Beck's beer. It featured his Spot painting trademark. A limited edition was in production but most were unsold.
|" I found the design terribly interresting, basically it says nothing about the drink, makes it trashy and from fun fair. The idiotic idea of some silly twit that want to be tredy but is a few year out of date. That sort of work from the Turner prize laureat just show how some brand names are just idiots.
