David Bowie PopUp Photographic Exhibit For Cancer Research UK Unveiled

Bookmark and Share

Less than 48 hours after David Bowie passed away Chalkie Davies received a phone call from Susie Howard, an old friend who suggested she wanted to put together a special PopUp photographic exhibit dedicated to David with all the prints being auctioned for Cancer Research UK.

She brought in two other world class photographers, Denis O'Regan his favourite Tour Photographer, and top Fashionista Photographer Tony McGee. They had all worked with David many times over many years.

Over the next five months she managed to secure space sponsorship from the Regent Street portfolio of The Crown Estate and a PopUp Gallery was built in a space in Heddon Street, where the Ziggy Stardust LP cover was shot and location of the Regent Street Heritage Ziggy Stardust Plaque. The show has adapted the Regent Street app to feature the photographs and audio from the three photographers describing their work with David.

All three photographers scoured their archives for those elusive unseen images, something to make the show spectacular. Tony produced a giant, computerized image using modern technology on a 30 year old photo and Dennis found photos that showed the real David Bowie, the man behind the man on stage.

In addition Chalkie Davies made a couple of short video clips, this one, exclusive to Artlyst, tells how he went from shooting the last night of Ziggy Stardust to working with David on film sets and in photo studios over the next 15 years, it contains many unpublished works, they are not in the show, just on this video.

Metro Imaging we're delighted to sponsor the printing and framing. London based design agency Small Back Room created the brand identity for BowieFFP. The curators of David Bowie Is....at the V&A worked with all three photographers on recording their memories for the catalogue and in the gallery.

David Bowie: Fame, Fashion, Photography runs at The Hub, 10 Heddon Street, London W1 from June 7-19  and from 11am to 7pm.
