An innovative mentorship programme for young galleries will showcase three emerging Brazilian galleries at Arcomadrid 2013 this yearstrong showing of 10 galleries from Brazil from a total of 240 international galleries.
For the first time under its new title, Latitude are delighted to announce plans for ARCOmadrid including that 10 Brazilian galleries will participate in the fair and bring leading international and Brazilian artists as part of their stands. This year Latitude has helped three young galleries take part in an international art fair for the first time with an innovative mentorship scheme. ARCOmadrid will be the first major event in a season of programming under the new name which will include the presentation of an extensive new website.
For ARCOmadrid, Latitude has implemented an innovative mentorship programme which has helped bring galleries Emma Thomas, SIM Galeria and Galeria Jaqueline Martins to an international fair for the first time. Through this scheme Latitude has helped partner the galleries with more established member galleries such as Galeria Vermelho, Luciana Brito Galeria and Casa Triângulo to help guide them through all of the necessary steps required to attend. These include selecting which works will be on the stand, shipping, the initial application and overall strategy. This programme has been implemented in partnership with ARCOmadrid, and this is the first year such a programme has been carried out.
Latitude will also be taking part in the professional meetings programme as part of ARCOmadrid which will bring together over 150 arts professionals including critics and curators from around the world. Latitude will present a professional meeting lead by Arte Madrid (Madrid Art Galleries Association) which will bring together similar organisations from France, Belgium, Argentina and Germany to discuss challenges and successes within the sector and help build partnerships. Other professional meetings at ARCO will be led by prominent art professionals such as Frances Morris, Head of International Art Collections at Tate Modern and Uta Meta Bauer, Curator and Dean of the School of Fine Art, Royal College of Art.
Highlights include works by Dario Escobar and Lourival Cuquinha from Baró Galeria of São Paulo, work by Edwing Sanchez and Hudinilson Jr. from Galeria Jaqueline Martins of São Paulo; Tiago Tibet and Eder Santos from Luciana Brito Galeria of São Paulo; Tunga and Patricia Leite from Mendes Wood of São Paulo; Assume Vivid Astro Focus and Sandra Cinto from Casa Triangulo of São Paulo; Hugo Mendes and Claudio Álvarez from Ybaktu Espaco de Arte of Curitiba and Cinthia Marcelle and Marcelo Cidade from Vermelho Gallery of São Paulo. Brazilian gallery presence in Madrid builds on the success of the Latitude’s galleries at the 2012 Art Basel Miami Beach where all galleries reported strong sales. ARCOmadrid bound galleries Luciana Brito Galeria, Mendes Wood, Casa Triangulo and Vermelho all recently showed work as part of Art Basel Miami Beach.
There will also be three galleries who will be taking part in the ‘Solo Projects’ section of the fair including gallery Emma Thomas of São Paulo showing a site-specific work by Erica Ferrari who was nominated for the PIPA 2012 art prize for Brazilian artists, Galeria Oscar Cruz of São Paulo showing work by Sebastian Gordin and SIM Galeria of Curitiba showing work by Delson Uchôa who represented Brazil at the 53rd Venice Biennale.
As of 2012, Latitude is the new title of the International Promotion Project for Brazilian Art Business which is a partnership between ApexBrasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency) and the Brazilian Association of Contemporary Art (ABACT). Originally established in 2007, ABACT is a non-profit association which brings together 46 commercial art galleries across seven states in Brazil, representing over one thousand Brazilian contemporary artists, helping to foster artistic careers within Brazil and abroad. Through a rich programme of activities that range from supporting Brazilian galleries in international fairs to promoting Art Immersion trips for international guests in Brazil, Latitude aims to improve professionalism within the art market and provide new opportunities for Brazilian galleries to trade internationally.
Mônica Novaes Esmanhotto, Manager of Latitude, said: “ARCO has traditionally been a fantastic gateway for Brazilian galleries to be introduced to European collectors and curators. For the past 13 years, Brazil has been successfully present at every edition of the fair including in 2008, when it was the official Guest Country and there were 34 exhibitors from Brazil. 2013 will be the year with the highest number of Brazilian galleries since 2008 and we are happy to be supporting this on-going relationship.”
ABACT was founded in 2007, comprised of eight original Brazilian member galleries – Casa Triângulo, Gabinete de Arte Raquel Arnaud, Luciana Brito Galeria, Galeria de Arte Luisa Strina, Galeria Forte Vilaça, Galeria Leme, Galeria Millan and Galeria Vermelho. The association currently has 46 members.
ABACT (The Brazilian Association of Contemporary Art) is a non-profit organization which aims to promote and publicise Brazilian culture and contemporary art. ABACT is committed to promoting institutional and commercial opportunities and seeks to develop mechanisms and propose policies together with the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Foreign Relations, the São Paulo Biennial Foundation, ApexBrasil and other institutions for the development and expansion of the primary contemporary art market. Latitude is one of the primary projects ABACT has implemented.
ApexBrasil (The Brazilian Agency for the Promotion of Exports and Investments) is an agency connected to the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade whose mission is to promote the exportation of Brazilian products and services, contribute to the internationalization of Brazilian companies and attract foreign investors to Brazil. By way of actions realized in partnership with sectorial entities, known as Integrated Sectorial Projects (ISPs), ApexBrasil organizes wide-ranging actions of commercial promotion like prospective and commercial delegations, business roundtables, support for Brazilian companies participating in large international fairs and visits from foreign buyers and opinion leaders in order to learn about the production structure in Brazil, as well as other actions and special projects.
Latitude started in 2007, this project has maintained the core goal of creating business opportunities for the art sector mainly through cultural promotion activities. Currently, 54 primary market art galleries participate in Latitude Brazil, representing more than 1000 artists. In 2011 Latitude commissioned a ground-breaking study on the Brazilian contemporary art market coordinated by Dr. Ana Letícia Fialho. Bringing to light key facts and important data on the activities of Brazilian contemporary art galleries, this study is now updated on a yearly basis and has become an essential tool for building strategy.
