Following on from Frieze London, the 43rd edition (October 20 to 23) of the Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain or International Contemporary Art Fair (FIAC) in Paris sees The Grand Palais event showcasing 180 galleries from 27 countries, the largest event of its kind in France. The Nave, the Salon d’honneur and the South-East Gallery on the first floor of the Grand Palais house galleries specialise in modern and contemporary art. The South and South-West Galleries, located upstairs, host contemporary and emerging art galleries as well as the Lafayette Sector. The Lafayette Sector, a program launched in 2009 by FIAC and the Groupe Galeries Lafayette, Official Sponsor, underlines their joint desire to provide tangible support to the actors of the emerging art scene in its international dimension. As well as the main fair, the second edition of Asia Now, Europe’s first and only fair devoted solely to Asian art, and the fourth edition of the Outsider Art Fair open during this busy week.
FIAC has built a major programme entitled Hors les Murs (Outside the Walls) which will display large-scale works, installations, and sound pieces in three publicly accessible sites across the city. The Tuileries Gardens, there will host artworks by 18 artists, designers, and architects, among them Ron Arad, Joe Bradley, Alexander Calder, Gloria Friedmann, Jean Nouvel and Jean Prouvé. There will also be two pieces by Stéphane Thidet at the Musée National Eugène Delacroix, the museum created within his former studio.
Oct 12, 2016 – Animal nature by Ernesto Neto, a steel sculpture presented by Max Hetzler, Berlin and Paris, at Petit Palais as part of FIAC On Site. Ernesto Neto was born in 1964 in Rio de Janeiro, where he lives and works. The large-scale sculpture animal nature is characteristic of Neto’s construction method. Steel elements are slotted together in the shape of flowers or foliage. The work resembles a giant toy made of prefabricated components challenging gravity. The sculpture will partly oxidise over time, turning into a deep reddish-brown contrasting with the white or pastel finish of previous works. Neto often plays with the idea that our body naturally serves as a scale reference in his sculptures and large-scale installations. His interest in the human need to interact is reflected in his works. Such is the case for another sculpture from this series that could serve as a bench.
The 43rd edition of Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain (International Contemporary Art Fair) will take place at the Grand Palais, the Petit Palais, the Jardin des Tuileries and Place Vendome from October 20, through October 23, 2016.
Since 2006, FIAC presents a programme of outdoor works in the Tuileries Garden in association with the Domaine National du Louvre et des Tuileries. The implication which both artists and galleries manifest in this programme and the exceptional qualities of the site makes it possible to feature some twenty projects every year. Installations, sculptures, performances and sound pieces take up temporary residence on the alleys, lawns, ponds and fountains of the garden creating an impressive outdoor exhibition. An ever-growing audience shows a keen interest for the artworks on view: in the centre of Paris and at the gates of the Louvre Museum, the garden provides an ideal context for their encounter with contemporary creation.
