Fig-2 The Ground-breaking Exhibition Programme Goes Crowdfunding

Bookmark and Share

fig-2, the ambitious exhibition programme curated by Fatos Ustek, which is presenting 50 exhibitions in 50 weeks at the ICA Studio in London, is launching a special campaign on the Art Fund’s crowdfunding platform ‘Art Happens’ on Friday 20 November 2015. It aims to raise £15,000 to create a special publication to record the project. The campaign will run for a month and close on Saturday 20 December to coincide with the last day of fig-2.

The fig-2 publication will document all 50 projects, 142 collateral events, Bicester Village Commissions, and Art Fund Curatorial Seminars and Workshops, providing a comprehensive record of the project, including details of its public outreach and impact. The fig-2 programme has spanned visual arts, literature, science, fashion, design and performance, with contributors ranging from activists, architects and actors to dancers, sculptors, speakers and even a cybernetics expert.

Each week will be represented by excerpts from interviews with each artist and the curator along with accompanying texts and visual documentation of the exhibitions. Showing the enormous changes that the ICA Studio has undergone throughout the project, the publication will provide a fascinating insight into the creation of the project.

A number of writers and curators have also been invited to respond to the fig-2 programme. Contributors include art critic Louisa Buck; Contemporary Art Society director Caroline Douglas; fig-1 curator and Director Mark Francis; Serpentine Gallery co-director Hans Ulrich Obrist; writer and lecturer Gilda Williams; and Tate Modern curator of performance Catherine Wood. These writers will contribute to fig-2’s aim to create a dialogue between artists, curators and commentators nationwide and internationally.

Fatos Ustek, Art Fund Curator at fig-2 says: “Imagine fig-2 as a giant house composed of 50 connected rooms, all differing in size, colour, feeling and manifestation. I have conceptually woven the exhibitions together in different ways, so that each exhibition leads to its successor and also relates to others in the overall programme. In this way, fig-2 is a large group exhibition realised over the course of 50 weeks in 50 steps. The fig-2 publication will play an important role in bringing together the threads and narratives that intersect throughout the programme, capturing the aesthetic and critical currencies of our times.”

Stephen Deuchar, director of the Art Fund, says, “fig-2 has been an extraordinary and much-talked-about programme in 2015, and this exceptional publication will help capture its astonishing 50 weeks. Nearly 18,000 visitors have passed through the ICA’s Studio doors to experience an incredible wealth and diversity of artists’ projects.  The London art scene will be a little poorer post-fig-2, and I urge everyone to support this Art Happens campaign so this memorable but ephemeral series can live on forever.”

Those contributing to the crowdfunding campaign will receive special works created by fig-2 artists who have exhibited at fig-2 throughout 2015.
