Cultures melting into each other, cities blurring their boundaries, superimposed, without a distinct separation between East and West, North and South. Sultana Raza’s photos lend themselves to existentialist questions. Mysterious isolated figures wander through these urban landscapes, with some of them lost in thought. Perhaps they are wondering who they are, or speculating on the identity of others. Where do they come from? Where are they going?

Do any of us really know the answers to these questions in the broader sense of the words? As soon as we get to a place that we assume we know, or where we’d like to be, future possibilities open up exponentially, asking us to re-think these questions.

Isolation in the industrialized West is growing in direct proportion to the expanding populations in cities. As one wanders through these concrete jungles of metropolises, one is forced to continually revise one’s opinions of who one is and what one is capable of.

While Sultana Raza is from Asia, her work will be exhibited in Espoo, Finland at the Galleria Espoonsilta from the 10th to the 16th of June as part of the 'Liquid Cities, Temporary Identities' exhibition curated by Luca Curci, and organized by the International ArtExpo group.
