Frieze New York launch their 2014 edition, on Randall’s Island Park, Manhattan next week from May 9 to 12. This will be the third outing for the fair founded by Amanda Sharp and Matthew Slotover in London in 2003. The fair will feature over 190 of the world’s leading contemporary galleries, with 53 participants from the fair’s host city.
Frieze New York combines the most exciting contemporary galleries from around the globe, alongside critically acclaimed Projects, Talks, Sounds and Education programs. Housed within an innovative design with natural light, and overlooking the East River, Frieze New York combines some of the best-known international galleries with emerging young spaces.
Frieze Projects at Frieze New York is curated by Cecilia Alemani and includes seven newly commissioned site-specific artworks. The artists participating this year are Darren Bader, Eduardo Basualdo, Eva Kotátková, Marie Lorenz, Koki Tanaka and Naama Tsabar. The program will also feature a special tribute to Allen Ruppersberg’s Al’s Grand Hotel, originally realized in 1971 at 7175 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles. The hotel will be restaged inside Frieze New York, in collaboration with Public Fiction and supported by COS.
Emerging galleries will take part in the Focus and Frame sections of the fair. Focus galleries are under ten years old and will show curated projects conceived for Frieze New York. The Frame section, dedicated to galleries established less than six years ago, will present solo presentations and is advised by curators Raphael Gygax and Tim Saltarelli.
Frieze Talks will Bring together leading artists, writers, and cultural commentators, Frieze Talks 2014 is programmed by Tom Eccles (Executive Director, Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, New York) and Christy Lange (Associate Editor, frieze). This year’s participants include Masha Alekhina and Nadya Tolokonnikova (Pussy Riot/Zona Prava) and Adam Szymczyk (Artistic Director, dOCUMENTA 14). Frieze Talks takes place in the onsite auditorium at Frieze New York from Friday, May 9 through Monday, May 12. Access to Frieze Talks is included in all admission tickets.
Frieze Sounds will be exhibiting for its third edition and will feature three commissioned audio works by international artists: Keren Cytter, Cally Spooner and Hannah Weinberger. Frieze Sounds is programmed and curated by Cecilia Alemani and presented with BMW. The works will be accessible at friezenewyork.com, available to download from May 9 and at a listening station within the fair.
Frieze Education will be combining workshops for high school students with visiting groups of school children to this year’s fair, the Education program at Frieze New York aims to encourage a collaborative working process and create an awareness of current practice in the contemporary art world. Sponsored by Deutsche Bank for the second consecutive year, the Education program will host a range of activities for visiting public school groups from local underserved areas.
Non-profit spaces at Frieze New York, will be reflected by three invited alternative art spaces in the city to present their works at the fair, this year: The Artist’s Institute, Artists Space and White Columns. All three organizations help support emerging and under-acknowledged contemporary artists.
This year the most innovative gallery stand at the fair will receive a prize supported by Champagne Pommery. The prize of 15,000 USD will be judged by an international panel of curators: Pablo León de la Barra, curator, Guggenheim UBS MAP, Latin America; James Rondeau, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, The Art Institute of Chicago; and Ali Subotnick, curator, The Hammer Museum at UCLA. The recipient of the Stand Prize will be presented with their award at 4pm on Thursday 8 May

Frieze NY takes place on Randall’s Island Park, Manhattan from May 9 to 12. Tickets to Frieze New York are on sale via the Visitors section of the Frieze New York website. A limited number of 10 USD student and under-25 tickets are also available, for the Monday of the fair. Please note: all tickets to Frieze New York are only available in advance.
