Galleries In EC1 And WC1 Unite To Create Art Open Day
Galleries in Clerkenwell and the surrounding area have in recent years become home to a large community of contemporary art organisations and commercial galleries. As a result a local gallery area map has been produced, which includes the 20 galleries and other contemporary art organisations in the area.
To mark the launch of the redesigned map, contemporary art spaces and galleries in London’s EC1 and WC1 districts, will be hosting special events and extending their opening hours from 12.00 to 20.00 on Saturday 18 May. A full listing of exhibitions and events is available on the website.
Participating galleries include: Ancient & Modern, Arcade, Art Review, Breese Little, Carslaw St* Lukes, Contemporary Art Society, Cubitt, Dalla Rosa Gallery, Domobaal, Eagle Gallery, Fold Gallery London, Gagosian, Maria Stenfors, Marsden Woo, Rod Barton, Rokeby, Strangelove Studios, The Arts Catalyst, Tintype, Work, and WW Gallery.
Some of the gallery highlights include: Gagosian's "Detached," an exhibition of new sculpture by Rachel Whiteread. Her title calls by name the process of abstracting or distantiating from reality that is an intrinsic part of the artistic process.
Punk Shop: Alan Kane at Ancient & Modern fuses the joke shop with his first adult art experience in 1977 on entering Seditionaries - Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren's boutique on the King's Road. Final day of the exhibition. Event: Artist signing of limited editions. Finnissage with aperitifs 4-6pm.
Beers Lambert, A Momentary Rise of Reason Dan Voinea, A Momentary Rise of Reason is the first UK-solo exhibition of the work of Romanian painter Dan Voinea. Hailing from a new school of contemporary realist painting, Voinea has endured an early 21st century phase that preferred whimsy over realism, manifest in this new series of momentous paintings that assert the reinvigoration of magic-realism in painting to an unprecedented degree.
event: Closing reception of Dan Voinea from 5-8pm on Saturday with music and drinks.
WW Gallery BERLIN The Forger's Tale: Quest for Fame and Fortune Broughton & Birnie, 12noon-8pm. An immersive, experiential, narrative, museum-style installation, in which Broughton and Birnie put on their contemporary take on the Weimar era: Degenerate art becomes Regenerate, audience is cabaret.
