FRED has announced the first solo show of paintings by London based artist Geraldine Swayne. Swayne is a painter and musician who makes delicate and alluring works on copper or aluminium panels, as well as larger works on canvas.

She takes her subjects from a wide rage of sources, from pornography, landscapes and portraits of friends and musical collaborators; she describes a creative and complex world that bridges artistic and musical creativity. As a member of the celebrated band 'FAUST', Swayne incorporates painting into her on-stage performances, and often documents her experimental performances in her paintings. Her small enamel paintings have all of the fascination of historical cabinet miniatures; small, intimate, often sexual imagery is rendered in jewel-like colours on tiny metal panels.

Her works on canvas also contain personal and autobiographical information, such as the works from a recent collaboration with American musician and performer Lydia Lunch. Swayne’s work was enthusiastically received at the Volta NY art fair in March, where she entered many international private and public collections including the permanent collection of Magasin 3, Stockholm.

Geraldine Swayne won the Northern Arts Travel award in 1990. Although better known as a painter, Swayne has a parallel practice as a film-maker and musician. In 1999 she made the world’s first super-8 -Imax film, East End, with music performed by Nick Cave and narrated by Miriam Margolyes. East End was selected for the London Film Festival in the same year. She left the film industry and worked as an assistant to Jake and Dinos Chapman, rebuilding Hell. She has been the keyboard player and singer in seminal Krautrock band Faust since 2005, and has toured widely with them, playing and painting in Museums and Theatres worldwide. In 2010, she was a finalist in John Moores painting prize, Walker Gallery, Liverpool. Geraldine’s work has been exhibited in a number of high-profile exhibitions in Europe. She lives and works in London and joined Fred [London] Limited in 2012.
