A comprehensive Old Masters and 19th Century auction has been announced by Ketterer Kunst. The auction includes highlights from Italian Baroque and Flemish masters. Bidders will will be particularly interested in Il Guercino’s seminal painting David With Goliath’s Head (1650). The work is painted in the hallmark contrasting light and dark style of the baroque era, the painting depicts David glancing towards the heavens, as if to ask for forgiveness for the brutal killing of Goliath. The work has been estimated to sell for €250,000 to €350,000 or £159,655.
The Old Masters and 19th Century auction represents the Flemish baroque; the sale includes Portrait of Maria de Medici, Queen of France (1631) by Antonius van Dyck. The work was painted in Antwerp during the Queen’s first year of exile, after she was dis-empowered and accused of high treason by her son Ludwig XIII. The portrait has a sale estimate of €30,000 to €40,000, $33,700 to $44,900, or £.21,522 to £28,674.
The majority of the 19th-century works to go under the hammer are from the collection of the the Bavarian financier Max Geiger. The collection included works by Adolf Heinrich von Liers as well as Bavarian landscapes by Karl Altmann, estimated at €20,000 to €30,000, $22,480 to $33,700, or £14,357 to £21,521; and Heinrich Bürkel, estimated at €30,000 to €40,000, $33,700 to $44,900, or £21,522 to £28,696.
The sale concludes with works by Adolph von Menzel, Gustave Courbet, Albrecht Dürer, and Rembrandt van Rijn. Old Masters & 19th Century Art with the Max Geiger Collection takes place in Munich on May 22.
