Hackney WickED 2016: Get Ready For London’s Super-Atmospheric Art Festival

Hackney WickED 2016

Hackney WickED CIC is always one of the high points of the Summer art season. Not only is it located in the super atmospheric area of Hackney Wick & Fish Island, with its labyrinth of enlightened open studios, galleries and bars, but also if it happens to be a nice day/night, you get to hang out around the river in the shadows of the Olympic Stadium and yes see some great art! The events start: Friday 29-Sun 30 July 2016 at locations in and around Hackney Wick & Fish Island. This is your annual chance to explore the studios and creative spaces with over 100 participants, in what is one of London’s more edgy hotbeds of creativity.

Studios confirmed to take part include: Mother Studios, Space (Britannia Works, Bridget Riley, White Building, Eastway Studio), See Studio, Stour Space, arebyte/ARBEIT, Lionworks, Wallis Rd/ Cell/ Liquid Studios, 92 White Post Lane, DEN-City1 , Vittoria Wharf, Fish Island Labs/ Swan Wharf, Grow Hackney.

Hackney Wick, the home of the most densely populated area of artists in the world, opens its doors for a weekend of art, performance, film and music. In such an exciting and creative place, Hackney WickED DIY Open Studios brings the community together to celebrate its diversity and uniqueness. Many of the studios are still under threat of closure, such as Wallis Road and Vittoria Wharf, and Hackney WickED CIC aims to support the creative community by collectively opening the doors of creative spaces to share and showcase the magic and cultural gem that is Hackney Wick.

Hackney WickED Art Festival began in summer 2008, springing up from the garden of The Residence Gallery, when a group of local artists decided to coordinate a series of local art events to highlight and celebrate the breadth and diversity of art and creativity in the area. Galleries including The Residence Gallery,Elevator Gallery, Decima Gallery and The Wallis Gallery set up exhibitions, studio doors were opened, a makeshift stage created and Hackney WickED Art Festival was born.

The festival allowed visitors the chance to explore the labyrinth of artist studios, live-work spaces and up-and-coming galleries hidden behind the normally unwelcoming façade of industrial streets and warehouse walls.

It kicks off with an explosive evening at the former Mick’s Garage, curated by Laura May Lewis, with live art performance from STRONTIUM 92 Alexis Milne, Tex Royale, Lu Ma Oi, Stray Transmission. London Sound Painting Orchestra, Beatbox Collective, Marie Brenneis, Dean Todd, Aoife Van Linden, Mai Nguyen Tri & more.
