Hauser & Wirth Gallery New York, London, Zurich And Somerset?

Hauser & Wirth is to open its fourth gallery in the English Countryside eight miles south of Shepton Mallet in Somerset. The new gallery is located at Durslade Farm on the edge of the ancient town of Bruton in the southwest of England. It aims to become a destination for experiencing art, architecture and the remarkable Somerset landscape through new and innovative exhibitions of contemporary art. Hauser & Wirth Somerset will also provide an extensive events and education programme inspired by the exhibitions, the countryside and the local community.

Each of the farm buildings at Durslade is unique, steeped in character and history. Empty for a number of years, these historically important buildings were in complete disrepair when they were recently  taken on. This project will not only create a centre for the arts; it will restore and conserve this collection of historic buildings for the enjoyment of future generations.

Hauser & Wirth is a global enterprise, founded in Zurich in 1992 by Iwan and Manuela Wirth and Ursula Hauser. In 1996 the Zurich gallery opened in the former Löwenbräu brewery building. Hauser & Wirth London opened on Piccadilly in 2003 and Hauser & Wirth New York opened to the public on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in September 2009. In October 2010, the gallery opened a new London space on Savile Row and will launch a second location, a 23,000 square foot exhibition and project space in New York City in early 2013, in conjunction with Hauser & Wirth’s 20th anniversary.

Hauser & Wirth Somerset aims to be a multi-purpose venue to share contemporary art with new audiences, whilst creating a platform for special events, for both a local and national audience. The gallery vows it will open its latest outpost on the edge of Bruton, Somerset in the summer of 2014.
