Helmut Newton David Lachapelle & Andy Warhol Headline Sale
Christie's to hold a Modern Photography auction peddling iconic works by key photographers such as Helmut Newton, Irving Penn and David Lachapelle
Christie’s describe the sale as ‘an opportunity to acquire some of the most important works of the history of photography, with works by 19th century masters, and a strong focus on post-war and fashion photography, led by the work of Irving Penn, Helmut Newton and Peter Beard’; ‘The incredible roll call of subjects captured includes Picasso, Greta Garbo, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, Marilyn Monroe, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Barack Obama.’
A self-portrait by Helmut Newton is set to top the bill with a pre-sale price tag of £90,000. Born Helmut Neustädter (October 31, 1920 – January 23, 2004), Helmut Newton was a German-Australian photographer who produced provocative, erotically charged black-and-white photos that have since become iconic and widely imitated. His famous ‘Self Portrait with Wife and Models’, dates from 1980, and it will be going under the hammer with another of his well-known works ‘10th Floor Hilton, Paris’, from 1976, which has been given an estimated value of between £30,000 and £50,000.
Alongside the photographs of Helmut Newton will be key portraits of supermodel Naomi Campbell by David Lachapelle, Peter Lindbergh, and Burt Glinn. Also important is the a 'stellar example of post-war photography' by Richard Avedon – a triptych portrait of Andy Warhol with his friends from Studio 54, called ‘Andy Warhol and Members of the Factory, New York City’. The work has an estimate of £25k to £35k.
